What is the purpose of this qualification?

This qualification is designed to show competence to the occupational standards required for Managers on Construction Sites.

What does this qualification cover?

This qualification is for Managers on site who are responsible for leading projects, controlling standards and evaluating work.

Specialist site management units are available across one or more of the following

  • Building and Civil Engineering
  • Highways and Maintenance Repair
  • Residential Development
  • Conservation
  • Demolition

Common mandatory units include effective working relationships, establishing and implementing health and safety systems, monitoring and controlling projects against standards, quality and agreed timescales, managing personal development and allocating and checking the work of others.

Who can take this qualification?

This qualification is for all learners aged 19 and above who are capable of reaching the required standards and have opportunity to demonstrate practical skills in a realistic construction working environment.  Learners do not need any explicit prior qualifications, knowledge or experience before starting the qualification but it is likely that they will already be employed in site management roles, with on-site management experience, overseeing, or starting to oversee, larger projects and sites with the authority, accountability and decision-making which comes with site management roles, in their respective discipline/s.

What can this qualification lead to?

Learners may use the qualification to gain employment as Site Managers, as evidence of their competence to prospective employers, or progress to such a role from their current position. The qualification can be used towards evidence of achievement of Construction Card Competence Schemes at Management level, where applicable, and where recognised by the employer. Such Card Schemes are not a licence to practice, and may be achieved through other routes, however they are widely recognised by employers and where stipulated, can be used to access sites and gain employment

Progression to membership of the Chartered Institute of Building is possible, though additional evidence will be required for professional review.

Who supports this qualification?

The specification for these qualifications has been approved by the Welsh Government for use by centres in Wales and by the Council for the Curriculum Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) for use by centres in Northern Ireland. This qualification has been accredited onto the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).

A portfolio of evidence gathered from a range of sources including workplace activities and realistic work environments, professional discussions, questioning and observation of performance
